Churro Recipe

Hello! I know I've been  posting more than usual recently, and that's because my busy schedule has cleared up, but I finally have some free time to post all the recipes I've had planned for the last couple of weeks. I'm so happy to share this churro recipe because churros are one of my favorite desserts. This recipe does take a bit of patience and a bit more skill is required to get it right. That being said, this is definitely a good recipe to build skills on if you want to improve.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (diced)
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for dough)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (for dough)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (for dough)
  • 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar (for dough)
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil (This will be used for frying so amounts will vary based on the size of your pan)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (for sugar coating)
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar (for sugar coating)
  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon (for sugar coating)(more can be added until it reaches your liking)
Instructions: Dough
  1. Add water, butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt into a pot or saucepan and slowly bring to a boil over medium to high heat. *Not too hot!
  2. Once it reaches a boil bring the heat to low and stir in the flour. You'll notice the the dough begins to form. Keep mixing until you reach a smooth mixture with minimal lumps
  3.  Take the dough off heat and let it cool
  4. While the dough is cooling mix the egg and vanilla together with the rest of the dough (after it has cooled) until completely combined
  5. Transfer your dough to a piping bag with a star tip of your choice (Make sure the opening is big enough t make decently sized churros)
Instructions: Frying
  1. Heat the vegetable oil until it reaches 355 degrees Fahrenheit and have about two inches worth of oil in your pan for frying (you can always add more oil if you're making bigger churros)
  2. Pipe lines of the dough into the hot oil and cut with scissors for a clean edge (You an make them bite sized or full length) *Don't overcrowd the pan to ensure even cooking
  3. Fry until they become a golden brown, it won't take long so pay close attention while frying
  4. Once they fry, put them on a plan with paper towels on it to soak up any remaining oil on the surface
  5. Finally add the brown sugar, white sugar and cinnamon into a shallow dish and coat the freshly fried churros in the cinnamon-sugar mixture by rolling them in the mixture
That's it!! This recipe is a little more advanced than some of my previous posts but I hope you try it yourself. Let me know if I should post a chocolate dipping sauce to go with this recipe.   :)
