Since Valentine's Day is coming up I've decided to put together an easy sugar cookie recipe. This is a pretty versatile recipe and sugar cookies are good for any occasion. This recipe will only be the cookie recipe and not the frosting. I'll be posting a royal frosting recipe shortly as well as other alternatives you can use to frost sugar cookies.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- *milk - (This will only be used under certain circumstances)
Instructions:
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prep a cookie sheet
- Cream together the softened butter and sugar with an electric mixer on the medium to high setting until you reach a creamy consistency (It's very important that the butter is softened, because this will make the process easier. But be patient it will take a couple of minutes before the butter and sugar have fully combined)
- Add the vanilla and egg into the mixture and continue to mix but on the low setting
- Add your flour to the mixture one cup at a time (This will make it easier to mix) *Do not over mix on this step*
- If your dough seems dry add some milk or even vanilla to make the dough easier to work with but this step is not necessary
- With clean hands roll out your dough on a floured surface and cut out your shapes (Make sure they aren't too thin or too thick to assure that they bake properly, about 1/2 inch works well but you can experiment and see what works)
- Bake for about 6-10 minutes, you don't want to see any browning on the cookie *Do not over bake, as it will affect the quality of the cookies while they cool* (Cookies that are smaller require less time in the oven but if your cookies have thicker edges then bake for slightly longer, so place close attention while they're baking)
- Let the cookies cool on a cooling rack for 10-20 minutes before adding frosting or decorating
